Great night at The Locke Bar last night for the ‘On The Nail’ reading celebrating National Poetry Day…lots of fine poetry and music!

National Poetry Day at The Locke Bar, Georges Quay, Limerick
The Limerick Writers’ Centre continue their new ‘On The Nail’ reading series with a special evening of poetry and music at The Locke Bar, George’s Quay, Limerick on Thursday 1st October to mark National Poetry Day.

Featured guest readers will read from the classics and at a special open-mic writers and poetry lovers of all hue and shade are invited along to read their own favourite poems. Even if you don’t write you are welcome to bring something along to read.
So if you’re a fan of Wordsworth, Frost, Heaney and others, this is your chance to read that poem. Music on the night will be provided by Chris Wood, Larry De Cleir and others.

This is also your chance to meet other writers and anyone interested in creative writing is welcome to come along on the night and meet with like-minded people, those interested in becoming part of a writing group are encouraged to meet and form groups under the auspices of the Limerick Writers’ Centre.

The night begins at 8.30pm and there is free admission and a free glass of wine and finger food for everyone attending. So join us on the night and make this event something special.

Featured Readers.Liam O’Brien and Myles Breen are well known in the theatre world being founder members, along with Mike Finn and Mike Burke, of Limerick’s newest theatre company, Bottom Dog. Recently Liam and Myles read poems from Desmond O’Grady new book, My Limerick Town, at the Belltable. Tonight they will read a selection of their favourite classic poems.

CIARAN O’DRISCOLL was born in Callan, Co Kilkenny, in 1943, and presently lives in Limerick. He is a committee member of Cuisle, Limerick City’s International Poetry Festival, and a member of Aosdána. He has published eight books of poetry including Moving On, Still There: New and Selected Poems (Dedalus Press, 2001), and Surreal Man (Pighog, 1996). In 2001, Liverpool University Press published his childhood memoir, A Runner Among Falling Leaves. A new collection is forthcoming in October 2009 from Three Spires (Cork), and ‘Swirl’, a CD which features him reading a number of poems, with musical accompaniment, was released in July.

Patrick Stack was born in Limerick, brought up in Kerry and now lives in Clare. A graduate of TCD he has recently began writing again after a long break. Currently working on a new collection.

Tom McCarthy is the winner of the inaugural Desmond O’Grady Trophy at the Desmond O’Grady International Poetry Festival. He is a native of Ballynanty but now lives in Ardnacrusha. He reads regularly at the White House Poetry Revival and has one Chapbook published.

About the White House PoetsThe White House Poets meets every Wednesday at the White House Bar, O Connell Street, Limerick. The reading has provided an open, supportive venue for countless poets to perform their work, and has fostered a community of poetry over the last six years . The open-mic regularly attracts upwards of twenty poets each week and guest poets from all over the world have taken part

About The SpiritStore Art CafeThe SpiritStore Art Cafe presents a collection of diverse cultural activities over the months of August and September to be hosted in the unique environment of a Limerick landmark,The Sarsfield Bar. In the coming weeks The Spirit Store project seeks to infuse this reclaimed space with an busy collection of talks, performances, debates / discussions, screenings, readings, meetings and chance encounters with musicians, writers, visual artists, film makers, collectives, as well as varied clubs and societies.This inclusive experiment is an open invitation for all of Limerick to experience, absorb and creatively contribute to an exciting project. The Sarsfield Bar is located on the corner of Rutland St and Bank Place directly across from the Hunt Museum. Opening times are 12.00 til sunset Tuesday to Sunday inclusive.(Coffee will be served free or with a donation but no food will be prepared or served in the space.)

Tim Cunningham was born in Limerick in 1942 and educated at Limerick C.B.S. and Birkbeck College, London. He has lived in Limerick, Tipperary, Dublin, Trowbridge, London, Newark (Delaware) and, presently, Billericay. He has published and read widely. His first collection, ‘Don Marcelino’s Daughter’ was published by Peterloo Poets in 2001 and reprinted in 2002 and 2004. His second collection ‘Unequal Thirds’ was published in 2006, again by Peterloo. His latest collection, Kyrie, is published by Revival Press – the imprint of the White House Poets. ‘Kyrie’, is firmly rooted in nineteen fifties’ Ireland – De Valera’s Ireland – a place and time, apparently so distant now, when religion permeated almost every aspect of life. And it is the lives that are celebrated here, with their pieties, loves, frustrations and hopes, the perennial human condition woven into the sacraments and liturgies of the everyday. Not quite the Limerick of Angela’s Ashes but nevertheless Tim Cunningham has continued on where Frank Mc Court left off but this time in poetry and verse.
